Brian D. Voss is currently serving as interim executive director the Pervasive Technology Institute. PTI is Indiana University's flagship organization for research and development in cyberinfrastructure, informatics, and computer science in support of science and engineering research, artistic creativity, and cybersecurity. Prior to assuming this role, he was leading the Humans Advancing Research in the Cloud (HARC) project within PTI.
Voss has been a leader in the development of campus- and regional-level cyberinfrastructure to support and advance research. He was a contributor to the report from the Task Force on Campus Bridging as part of the NSF's Advisory Committee for Cyberinfrastructure. Significant extramural funding he has obtained includes an NSF award that helped bring Indiana and Purdue universities into the "TeraGrid" environment in 2003 and a similar effort that brought Louisiana resources into the TeraGrid in 2007. During his career, he has been a Primary Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on projects awarded more than $13 million.
Voss is no stranger to PTI or Indiana University. He has served IU in numerous leadership roles in various computing organizations that preceded UITS and was a member of the first UITS senior leadership team appointed in 1997 by then-VP for IT McRobbie. He later was appointed associate vice president for telecommunications, where he oversaw several advances in the development of networking resources to support research, teaching and learning, and campus life. In 2002 he was appointed as the chief operating officer for the Pervasive Technology Labs (PTI’s predecessor) and served in both roles until he left IU to become Louisiana State University’s first vice chancellor and chief information officer in 2005. Voss went on to serve as vice president and chief information officer at the University of Maryland (College Park), and after retiring from career roles, he served in interim CIO roles at both Case Western Reserve University and Clemson University.
With 35 years’ experience in higher education and the private sector, Voss is an internationally respected leader in the field. He has been at the forefront of many broad-impact initiatives and trends in information technology, including the development of research-focused cyberinfrastructure, advancing discoveries in the sciences, arts, and humanities; the rise of MOOCs and the proliferation in use of online learning; cybersecurity and its impacts on institutional risk and compliance; and the broader value in the development of sound IT environments in support of the mission of 21st century universities. He continues to serve the higher education IT/CIO community in engagements that allow him to facilitate discussions between that community and the organizations and associations that serve them. He brings value to the profession by articulating in his writing aspects and challenges facing those in the role of CIO at universities.
Voss was honored as the first-ever EDUCAUSE Presidential Fellow in 2012. He served the association and the community of higher education IT professionals as a knowledgeable and experienced voice, clearly articulating the critical role that information technology plays in addressing the transformation of higher education in the face of the disruption currently underway. Voss blogged his views in his capacity as Presidential Fellow in Got a Minute? and continues his commentary via his LinkedIn op-ed articles.
