UITS Monitor: Traveling over break? Keep your data safe from cyber thieves

Holiday traveling is prime time for cyber thieves

You may be ready for a vacation, but it’s no time to take it easy on protecting your data.

Foreign or domestic travel makes you susceptible to cyber criminals. A few steps you can take before, during, and after your stay can help mitigate risk to your digital life.

Beware of charging stations as juice jackers set up free kiosks in hopes of stealing your data. Use a wall outlet if available or bring an extra battery. Use eduroam if available instead of free Wi-Fi and avoid installing software patches while away.

For faculty and staff, your IT professional can help you secure data while traveling. If you must bring a work device, consider taking a loaner, as portable equipment and its data are vulnerable to theft and loss.

Tech support available during winter break

No school, no problem—your support center team is available.

Even during winter break, the folks working in UITS support still have your back. They’ll be on hand for most of the three-week break, poised and ready to answer your technology questions.

The UITS Support Center’s phone, email, and chat options will be up and running every day except for Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year’s Day (January 1). During closings, phone calls will route to the UITS Contact Center for an answering service.

The UITS Contact Center will remain open 24/7 for the break.

Setting up academic advisor appointments now easier at Maxwell Hall

UITS’ user experience team develops more seamless process for seeing academic advisors.

At the beginning of each semester, there’s often a rush of students checking in at Bloomington’s Maxwell Hall to see their academic advisors. The process for scheduling and expediting those appointments is now easier thanks to the UITS user experience (UX) team.

The UX team simplified the process by creating a Student Appointment Scheduler. Students now check in at a kiosk. The new sign-in system reduced demands on front-desk assistants and saved hundreds of hours lost in delays and wait times for both students and advisors.

The UX team continues to work with the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education to come up with ways to enhance the advising experience.
