A recent Bloomington campus power outage interrupted classes for several hours, but what do you do if teaching is disrupted for more than a day?

A variety of circumstances might require you to take your class online with minimal notice, such as a campus closure, severe weather, a flu outbreak, or a family emergency.

Workshop builds your virtual-reality skills

The IU Center of Excellence for Women & Technology hosts ‘Intro to WebVR and 3D Design’

Interested in virtual reality (VR) but unsure how to get started? Join the IU Center of Excellence for Women & Technology on December 7 for a winter-themed workshop to create your own VR snowscape. The no-fee workshop provides an entry-level introduction to web-based VR and 3D design.

Participants will gain a basic understanding of VR and 3D design by creating their own VR experience from scratch. They will learn how to create several 3D designs and how to place those designs in a custom VR environment. Their final VR scene can be viewed on any VR headset or mobile device.

Save the date: internationally renowned security technologist coming to Bloomington

Harvard “security guru” to headline first Cybersecurity Speaker Series on January 30, 2020

Bruce Schneier, a fellow and lecturer at Harvard’s Kennedy School and a public-interest technologist, works at the intersection of security, technology, and people. Called a “security guru” by The Economist, he will be speaking to a broad audience as part of the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) Security Speaker Series.

Schneier is the author of more than a dozen books and hundreds of articles, essays and academic papers. More than 250,000 people read his Schneier on Security blog and Crypto-Gram newsletter. He is frequently interviewed by the media and has testified before Congress.

Tech center announces new research areas, eLearning Lab

Data To Insight Center to focus on use of data and technology in classrooms, communities, and society at large

The Data To Insight Center (D2I) will focus on responsible use of data and technology in classrooms, communities, and society at large. The center’s efforts will emphasize four new areas:

  • eLearning
  • Smart and connected communities
  • Transparent high-performance computing
  • Open science

“The responsible use of data and technology in society will define the future,” said Beth Plale, D2I director. “This repositioning of D2I will bring expertise to the table on the numerous issues in privacy, infrastructure and open science that will influence generations to come.”
