UITS Monitor: UITS Support Center Thanksgiving hours

UITS Support Center Thanksgiving hours

It's almost the time of year when we take a few days off, gather around a table with our families, and stuff ourselves silly, then watch football and mess around on our devices till it's time to go back to school and work.

Should you have technological trouble while you're home for Thanksgiving break, the UITS Support Center is open through most of it. Calls on the holiday will be taken by an answering service, and agents will follow up with you the following day. The hours are a bit different for in-person visits as well.

Are you planning to teach in Canvas for the spring 2016 semester, but aren’t sure which tool or feature is similar to what is offered in Oncourse? You can find the answer via the online “Tool Map,” which lists each Oncourse tool and its functional counterpart in Canvas.

In addition to providing the corresponding Canvas tool and location, this resource also includes screenshots (or screencasts), along with links to additional information in the online Canvas guides. You can access the guide and find other Canvas help resources by clicking on “Where is it in Canvas?” under the heading “Transitioning from Oncourse to Canvas” in the link below.

Green IT tips for the holidays

When buying electronics for the holidays:

Look for environmentally friendly products. Use Energy Star and EPEAT ratings as your guide.

Enable power management settings to minimize energy use. Add a smart strip for further energy savings.

Recycle broken or obsolete electronics to recover valuable materials like steel, gold, silver, aluminum, and copper to prevent the dispersal of dangerous heavy metals into the environment.

Reuse is better than recycling. On average, 65 percent of the energy used by a device is used in making it. Donate it to an organization or individual that can put it to use for several more years.

Beware of data theft. Before donating or recycling electronics, wipe your personal information from any device that has a memory. If you are unable to wipe a failed device, remove the hard drive and have it destroyed. In Bloomington, IU Surplus Stores will, for a small fee, shred your hard drive or cell phone.
