IU wins Innovators Award for OneCampus, the commercial spinoff of One.IU

Campus Technology magazine names OneCampus to its annual list of higher education innovators

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — OneCampus, the commercial counterpart of Indiana University’s One.IU app store for online services, has been named a 2015 Campus Technology Innovators awardee in the IT Infrastructure and Systems category. The product was made commercially available in partnership with rSmart, a technology solutions provider.

Each year, the Innovators Awards recognize institutions, technology project leaders and vendor partners that have used technology in new ways to support teaching, learning, administration and operations. Campus Technology, a higher education technology magazine and information source, sponsored the 11th annual awards program in May.

Invented at IU in 2013 to replace the university’s web portal OneStart, One.IU became the one-stop shop for access to the university's online services, such as finances, academics, classes, almost any service at IU. Word spread, and a number of colleges and universities expressed interest in deploying the solution on their campuses. In July 2014, IU partnered with rSmart to make One.IU available to all higher education institutions as OneCampus. The cloud-based solution has already been adopted by more than a dozen colleges and universities across the country.

"One.IU replaces complex navigation with the simple act of search to get something done – it’s search, click, done," said Brad Wheeler, IU vice president for information technology and CIO. "It has already been transformative at IU with hundreds of service apps, and we are gratified that our commercial partner rSmart is making the OneCampus cloud service available for institutions of all sizes."

At campuses around the world, smartphone and tablet use is skyrocketing. At IU, more than 60 percent of the traffic on One.IU is from mobile devices. One.IU allows users to quickly search and connect with the services and information they need in one location, from any device. Users also play a role in helping evaluate and rate services and provide feedback on ways to improve. In addition, rotating banners also highlight timely or important information such as class registration deadlines or upcoming events.

"Mobile technology has changed the way we connect to information. We expect it to be fast, modern, easy, and intuitive," said Rob Lowden, IU associate vice president of enterprise systems. "Rather than spending time and resources on an overhaul to our existing legacy portal, One.IU was designed by focusing on user needs and feedback. It’s very gratifying to be recognized by Campus Technology for our hard work."

Indiana University and rSmart have worked together for more than a decade on various projects and initiatives. The Indiana University Research and Technology Corporation was instrumental in commercializing OneCampus with rSmart.

"Indiana University has a long history of creating innovative solutions that solve common challenges and meet the needs of their students, faculty, and staff. We are honored to partner with the One.IU team to provide schools with this fresh, new approach to organizing their web-based services and applications," said Tony Potts, rSmart CEO.
